July/August 2026: West Broad Street Water Main Replacements  

As part of its commitment to upgrading the water infrastructure in the Borough, NJAW will next begin a major capital program to replace the water main on West Broad Street and address lead and galvanized water service lines to homes in that area.  Letters to impacted residents/businesses are expected to be delivered early the week of July 20, which will be quickly followed by test pit work to determine which properties require service line replacements.  There will be no direct expense to any homeowner or business for the replacement of these service lines.

The project to replace the water main in West Broad Street is anticipated to take approximately four weeks and is designed to be completed before the start of school, with limited service interruptions on a house-by-house basis when each building is reconnected. NJAW will communicate directly with each impacted owner as those dates approach. When the project is completed, the work will need approximately 90 days to physically settle before the road will receive a much-needed full repaving.  NJAW, the Borough’s engineers and Hopewell Valley Emergency Services have been working to ensure interruptions to traffic and access to homes are as limited as possible, and construction is planned on a block-by-block staged basis to keep roads open or partially open when feasible.  NJAW and the Hopewell Township Police Department will orchestrate the traffic control plan and the Borough will provide regular updates as the project progresses.  Residents will be kept informed through door-to-door letters, website postings, and CodeRED reverse-911 notifications, with the on-site inspector serving as the primary point of contact. Hart Avenue Construction  

Starting on or around Monday April 21, 2025, Hopewell Borough’s contractor will be working along Hart Ave. to install new block curbing, replace the existing driveway aprons, repair/upgrade the stormwater system, reset the sanitary sewer maintenance holes, and mill/pave paving of the entire length of the street.  Work is expected to be completed in 10-12 weeks. Elizabethtown Gas Pipe Project 

Starting on or around Monday June 2, 2025, Elizabethtown Gas will be working in Hopewell to repave Taylor Terrace, Windsor Way and South Lanning Avenue.  The work is expected to involve partial road closures on Monday June 2 and Tuesday June 3. 

North Greenwood Ave. Traffic Calming/Safety Project

Planned for late Spring 2025, the Borough and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) are collaborating on an “EXPO” experimental pop-up demonstration traffic calming project, which will include a traffic calming island center on North Greenwood Avenue near Washington Street along with an enhanced crosswalk at North Greenwood Avenue and Hart.  More information can be found here.   

Princeton Ave. / Carter Road County Bridge Replacement Project – August 15

Starting on or around August 15, 2024 Mercer County will be replacing a bridge on Princeton Avenue/Carter Road south of Hopewell Borough. Through the use of a bypass lane, the project no longer anticipates any full closures or detours. Further information on the timing and any detours (currently none are anticipated) will also be shared on the Borough website when it is available and information on the proposed detour can be found here. (note that the original date for the project to start was July 29th, and was postponed to August 15) 

Recently Completed Projects 

In March 2025 Mercer County completed a project to replace several sections of stormwater pipe under West Broad Street (CR 654) near Eaton Place. 

• Mercer County has completed the milling and paving of East Broad Street.  In the coming weeks, final painting and stripping will be completed, this work should not require any significant detours. 

• The week of August 5, 2024 a contractor, working on behalf of the Borough, repaired a water main leak near 11 East Broad Street.  

• All 13 Sanitary Sewer Casting shave been replaced East Broad Street in anticipating of the County paving the road this season. This work was arranged to not involve full road closures and was completed ahead of schedule. 
• The repair of 4 water leaks under East Broad Street started on May 28, 2024 and is has been completed.
• On Newell Place a new water main, new water service lines, and a new fire hydrant have been installed, and the road was then completely reconstructed. That project also included the installation of granite block curbing and the rebuilding of the existing stormwater basin and sanitary sewer utility hole.
• Work on the complete reconstruction of the Walnut Avenue roadway has been completed. In addition to the reconstruction, a limited amount of granite block curbing and stormwater drainage was also installed.
• Mercer Street was milled & paved and received a new fire hydrant in June, 

Other Borough Construction Projects 

 

• The Hopewell RR Station recently underwent a renovation of the exterior of the building. Roofing, windows, trim, as well as the repair/repointing of the masonry are to be addressed during this project which is partially funded by The New Jersey Historic Trust.
