North Greenwood Ave. Traffic Calming/Safety Project

Pedestrian and Traffic Safety

Information on traffic calming and pedestrian safety efforts

As part of Hopewell Borough’s ongoing commitment to the safety of all of our residents and visitors the Borough recently secured the support of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) to collaborate on an “EXPO” experimental pop-up demonstration traffic calming project.

Planned for later this spring, the Borough will be testing a traffic calming island center on North Greenwood Avenue near Washington Street along with an enhanced crosswalk at North Greenwood Avenue and Hart Avenue, acting as a gateway into town from the north.  The improvements are designed to make crossing safer at Hart Avenue and slow traffic as it enters the Borough with both visual and physical improvements to the road. The location was chosen for the demonstration to allow the Borough to review and test the impact of entry gateway improvements on the only municipal road that approaches town, with an eye towards possibly implementing similar treatments on our major county road entrances in the future if successful.

An informational flyer about the project can be downloaded below, and will be distributed to local residents as part of the outreach plan to collect information on the effect of the traffic calming project.

There will be a presentation on the demonstration project at the April 3, 2025 Borough Council meeting. A copy of the presentation and link to the video of the meeting will be posted here, following the meeting.

About the Experimental Pop-Up Project

Hopewell Borough, in partnership with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), is installing a traffic calming demonstration project on N Greenwood Avenue between Washington Ave and Hart Ave.

This project includes a painted median, painted curb extensions, and vertical bollards to help slow vehicle speeds and improve safety for people walking and biking.

What is an Experimental Pop-Up?

An experimental pop-up is a quick, low-cost, and action-driven approach to create meaningful improvements in roadway safety. These projects allow municipalities to repurpose existing infrastructure, test new materials, and refine concepts before making larger capital investments.

These projects aim to:

  • Provide a quick, cost-effective demonstration of a road safety enhancement
  • Engage the community and raise awareness about roadway safety

What project elements will be installed?

  • Curb Extensions: Shorten crossings and narrow car travel lanes to reduce speeding.
  • Bollards & Parking Stops: Define painted curb and edges and narrow car travel lanes to reduce speeding.
  • High Visibility Crosswalk: Help drivers see pedestrians.
  • Median: Narrow car travel lanes to reduce speeding.

Sharrow Markings: Alert drivers that people might be bicycling in the roadway.
