Working with the Borough’s partners at the the Mercer County Planning Office, Mercer County DOT and the County Engineer’s office, the intersection at Broad and Greenwood was recently upgraded with an important new safety feature: Leading Pedestrian Interval (“LPI”) signaling. When activated by pushing the walk button, this feature allows pedestrians crossing the street to have an exclusive walk signal while cars are stopped in all directions. In the case of Broad Street, the exclusive pedestrian leading interval provides an approximately 7 second head start for crossing. This allows pedestrians to have increased visibility, reduces conflicts between turning cars and walkers, increases the likelihood of motorists yielding to pedestrians and provides enhanced safety while crossing.
The implementation follows a study conducted by the County’s engineering consultants in late 2025 and a presentation to the public at a Borough Council meeting in February (for video of the presentation please click here and jump to approximately 17 minutes, 30 seconds into the meeting and a PDF of the presentation is linked below).
